At 2.44am on Friday came the reverse Portillo moment. Stephen Twigg, the man who captured Enfield Southgate eight years ago, was obliged to give it back.

Then Mr Twigg was a slender unknown young man who encapsulated the 1997 election by beating the man who was seen as embodying the arrogance of Conservative power.
