UK set to accelerate public spending

Alistair Darling, the British chancellor of the exchequer, plans to bring forward billions of pounds of public spending in an emergency boost to the UK economy as it heads into an expected recession in 2009.

Mr Darling wants to accelerate spending on projects such as new schools and hospitals, raiding future budgets to give a Keynsian boost to the economy.
