Rage grows over slowness of federal response

Politicians in the ravaged southern states yesterday branded the chaos in hurricane-hit areas a "national disgrace", as criticism intensified of the federal government's response.

State officials across parts of Louisiana and black lawmakers in Washington issued increasingly hostile condemnations of the government's reaction, underscoring the tough political battle that could lie ahead for President George W. Bush.
