A senior Shia lawmaker loyal to anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr was killed on Thursday morning by a roadside bomb in Baghdad, raising concerns about the potential for violence ahead of provincial elections expected early next year.

Sadrist lawmaker Saleh al-Auqaeili was killed in the southern part of Sadr City, a vast Shia district in eastern Baghdad, Iraqi officials said.
