Sergio Marchionne has become fêted as a superhero in the automotive industry after his remarkable turnround of Fiat. Against all expectations, this car industry outsider managed to revive the Italian automotive group at a time when most believed it was about to fall over a cliff.
And despite the current trauma the world car industry is experiencing, Fiat is still clinging on the road. But that does not mean that Mr Marchionne’s job is done. Far from it. By his own admission, Fiat remains sub-scale and needs to treble the size of its annual car sales to about 6m to survive in the long term.
