UK retailers in battle at dawn

Bargain hunters started queuing for Boxing Day sales as early as 2am on Friday as retailers tempted shoppers with drastic price cuts after a generally dismal run-up to Christmas.

However, analysts warned that scenes of frantic shoppers surging through stores would not rescue the retail sector from some of the most difficult trading conditions it has faced for years.
