Japan’s opposition appoints Ozawa strategist

The new president of Japan’s biggest opposition party has appointed his scandal-hit predecessor to lead its electoral strategy ahead of a general election at which it hopes to topple the long ruling Liberal Democrats.

Yukio Hatoyama, who was voted head of the Democratic party of Japan on Saturday, won an early boost from snap opinion polls that Sunday suggested he is already a more popular choice for prime minister than LDP incumbent Taro Aso.
