Across the world, M&A advisers are keeping their fingers crossed that the prospect of BlackRock’s acquiring Barclays Global Investors – billed as the second-biggest asset management deal ever – will open the floodgates to similar moves.
It is a big change from two or three years ago, when bank boards were proclaiming how diversifying into asset management would provide the ballast to offset the volatility of investment banking earnings.
