Merkel warns of fall in economic growth

Germany can no longer expect to avoid damage from the mounting global econ-omic storms, with a "significant fall" in economic growth likely in 2009, Angela Merkel warned yesterday.

The German chancellor said a "clear economic slowdown" appeared unavoidable and that recent falls in unemployment in Europe's largest economy would also come to an end. "The econ-omic context in which we are operating is certainly not getting easier," she said.
