Imperial defies the FTSE gloom

Imperial Tobacco defied the downward trend after its joint broker made positive comments ahead of half-year figures, due next week.

Shares in the maker of John Player Special cigarettes improved 1.6 per cent to £25.40 after Morgan Stanley said it expected the results, due on Tuesday, to be a significant catalyst.
