The African National Congress on Saturday fell just short of a commanding two-thirds majority even as South Africans granted the former liberation movement a renewed mandate to guide the continent’s biggest economy through tough times.
Final results released by the Independent Electoral Commission from Wednesday’s general election – which was praised by foreign observers – showed the ANC had won 65.9 per cent of the vote down from the record 69.7 per cent in won in 2004.
