Schumer adds to doubts over ‘bad bank’

Political backing for a “bad bank” to deal with toxic assets in the financial system ebbed on Tuesday, as Charles Schumer, an influential senator, said he did not support the idea.

Mr Schumer, a member of the Senate Democratic leadership and of the Senate Finance Committee, said he favoured using insurance-style guarantees to limit losses on portfolios of troubled assets.
