Fortescue lays out plans to raise $1bn

Fortescue, the Australian mining company, is considering raising as much as US$1bn in capital to expand one of the country’s most ambitious iron ore projects and meet strong demand from Chinese steelmakers.

The financing and development plans outlined on Monday underline the determination of Andrew Forrest, Fortescue’s founder, to challenge the dominance of BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto over the Australian iron ore industry.
