Business and politics: the unbridgeable gap

Politicians as businessmen, or businessmen as politicians: it is hard to think which of those combinations produces the less successful outcome. What does seem to be true is that few make the transition from their respective worlds with any great success or distinction, and many make spectacular failures.

Two wealthy businessmen are fighting to preserve their positions as prime ministers of their countries: Thaksin Shinawatra in Thailand, and Silvio Berlusconi in Italy. One powerful former head of government - Gerhard Schröder, the last German chancellor - is having to defend his move into business against political attacks from erstwhile foes and allies alike.
