Premier Farnell yesterday dismissed rumours that it was in discussions with Electrocomponents, the rival electronics distributor, as sales rose 7.5 per cent in the third quarter.

Harriet Green, chief executive, said: "There is no basis whatsoever for the rumour, we have not yet reviewed the note, but we do not agree with its conclusions and it is not helpful."
