Nasty side effects of debt innovation

Three months ago, leading bankers involved in securitisation, a sector dedicated to creating complex debt instruments such as subprime securities, gathered for a conference in Barcelona. The mood seemed as sunny as the Spanish skies.

Champagne flowed, participants gossiped about bumper bonuses – and most financiers thought 2007 would deliver a record year for this corner of finance.
