Selected DNA profiles face axe

Thousands of innocent people will have their DNA profiles removed from a national police database under proposals announced by the Home Office on Thursday , though the plan stops far short of removing all of those not convicted of a crime.

Some 850,000 people who have not been convicted have their DNA recorded on the database, which carries the details of about 4.5m people.
