Santander and BBVA defy global crisis

Santander and BBVA, Spain’s two biggest banks and among the world’s most profitable, announced higher net profits in 2008 on Wednesday in spite of the global crisis that has decimated the financial sector.

The profit growth and the dividend policies of the two banks were nevertheless constrained by the Bank of Spain’s insistence that Spanish institutions set aside more provisions and bolster their capital ratios in preparation for a difficult 2009.
