Credit crunch a final twist in rocky road for ex-mutual

This week Bradford & Bingley will end its eight-year history as a publicly-listed bank – after 44 years as a building society – following its anticipated government rescue.

It was the last to remain independent among the former building societies – Abbey National, Halifax, the Woolwich, Cheltenham & Gloucester, Alliance & Leicester and Northern Rock – that had demutualised since the 1980s.
