Agriculture: A growing problem

About 70 per cent of the world’s fresh water is used in agriculture. Yet in trying to minimise consumption, tough trade-offs emerge.

While rising incomes from farming have cut poverty in many countries, growing demand for food is likely to put increasing strains on the global water supply. Irrigated agriculture is thought to provide almost 60 per cent of the additional food that will be required over the next 25 years, according to the World Bank.
