Sir, Wolfgang Munchau could not be more right to argue that the current debate about European social models has got things the wrong way round (”Why social models are irrelevant”, October 24). National welfare states should not be stripped away to make countries better fit with Europe. Rather, European economic governance needs to be reformed to better accommodate the diverse political, social, and economic ambitions of the member states.
