Tensions as Lugovoi extradition attempt fails

Britain is preparing a tough diplomatic response after Russia yesterday refused a UK request to extradite Andrei Lugovoi, a former KGB agent, to stand trial for the murder of Russian émigré Alexander Litvinenko.

The view in Whitehall was that the government was "not prepared to let this lie".
