US economy grows slower than expected

Fears that the US economy has hit a soft patch intensified on Thursday on data showing slower-than-expected growth of 3.1 per cent in the first quarter, the weakest performance in two years.

The figures--a blow to hopes that business investment would offset slowing consumer spending--challenge the Federal Reserve's view that its chief task remains to head off inflationary pressures.
