It would be easy for a casual visitor listening to the chatter of Ankara’s political classes to assume that the ruling Justice and Development party had lost the municipal elections it vigorously contested across Turkey on March 29.
In fact, its formidable grassroots organisation paid off once again, winning the AKP – now halfway through its second term in government – 39 per cent of the national vote, well above the combined score of its two main rivals.
