Industry compromises Aso’s ambitions

Japanese industry’s split personality on climate change is a significant constraint on the ability of Taro Aso, prime minister, to adopt large cuts in carbon emissions.

Business has invested heavily in green technology and hopes to gain from worldwide attempts to counter global warming. At the same time, industry and the Keidanren, its main lobby group, have led opposition to high or mandatory targets for cuts in Japan’s own carbon emissions.
