Opel surprised as GM steers away from deal

GM's decision yesterday to retain Opel caught even senior managers at the European carmaker completely by surprise.

Just hours before GM's strategic U-turn, Carl-Peter Forster, head of GM Europe, displayed confidence that the planned sale to Canadian car parts maker Magna would close by the end of the year.
