Hold the front page. In a stunning break with hallowed tradition, a world leader – the president of the US no less – has set about doing what he said he would. For those paid to interpret politics, life has been turned on its head. If things were to go on like this and, heavens forfend, if anyone else were to follow suit, we would have to admit that politicians sometimes mean what they say.

In truth, that last sentiment probably goes too far. It will take a long time to crack the thick crust of cynicism that coats the media’s view of politics. Barack Obama may have delivered a shock by signalling he intends to redeem his election pledges. But we have seen such naive enthusiasm before. Circumstance will yet force him to fall into the familiar rhythm of exchanging principle for politics. So, anyway, the commentariat reassures itself.
