There’s always a sudden spurt of energy in the first days of September. People are buoyed by summer resolutions and refreshed from an August away. Some of my clients, wisely, choose not to return to London until mid-September, enjoying an empty Amalfi Coast, under-populated Greek isles, free-from-tourists Ibizan bars or their favoured Côtes d’Azur boites de nuits now there is room on the dance floor. For my part, I’ve been anticipating the return to work and have my office deep cleaned and ready for business.
The first two-thirds of this year have gone surprisingly well and the question that remains – and no doubt will continue to – on clients’ lips is, “Where is the market going?” And my answer, after a lot of waffle that has me cite city analysts’ predictions, supply versus demand, the strength (or lack) of sterling and London’s position as a financial centre, remains “I don’t know”. Truthfully, I don’t believe anyone does.
