Richard Bowker, chief executive of National Express, on Tuesday night announced his resignation from the struggling bus and rail operator, just hours before it was due to make a crucial trading statement.

Mr Bowker is set on Wednesday to update the market on the progress of the company’s East Coast rail franchise, which has come under pressure from falling passenger revenues at the same time as the company wrestles with its £1.2bn ($2.0bn) debt pile.
