Wall Street dominated by volatile trading

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 11,000 for the first time since February 2006 on Tuesday as fears about the financial sector, a dramatic fall in oil prices and news that the SEC planned to limit short-selling played against one another.

The volatile day began in typically gloomy fashion with financials under particular pressure after a number of analyst downgrades, a banking-led sell-off in European and Asian markets and some poor results.
