Smith to step down as home secretary

Jacqui Smith will resign as home secretary in the forthcoming reshuffle, government insiders have confirmed. But they said Ms Smith was not expected to make a formal resignation statement on Tuesday.

The home secretary told Gordon Brown two months ago that she wanted to stand down in the reshuffle, following controversy over her expenses claims, government insiders told the Financial Times.
