3i, the private equity group, has opened the door to a sale of its stake in Venture Production, the oil and gas company being pursued by Centrica.

Graeme Sword, Aberdeen-based head of its oil gas and power team, has stepped down from the Venture board, making it possible for 3i to sell its stake without falling foul of insider trading rules.
