Bush presses House on surveillance bill

President George W. Bush on Wednesday urged Congress to pass legislation that would give phone companies immunity from prosecution for helping the US government eavesdrop on phone and e-mail conversations.

Mr Bush also vowed to veto any attempt to extend the temporary existing law, which expires this weekend. After months of wrangling, the Senate this week agreed to give immunity to telecoms companies, a measure that is not included in the House version of the legislation.
