Fukuda calls for stimulus package

Yasuo Fukuda, prime minister, has set his newly appointed economics minister to work on a stimulus package, fuelling expectations the ruling coalition may call an early election.

“I think the prime minister is strongly aware that the Japanese economy is facing difficulties and feels that we must use all measures within our means beforehand to do everything that can be done,” said Kaoru Yosano, a fiscal conservative.
