Treasury chief defends 'blank cheque'

The US government plan to rescue Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac faced scrutiny in Congress yesterday, as uneasy legislators quizzed a panel of senior policymakers on the proposal announced over the weekend.

Some lawmakers, mainly Republicans, criticised the Treasury for demanding a "blank cheque" to invest in the two mortgage companies, potentially exposing taxpayers to big losses.
