Socialists scorn Barroso's liberal stance on Europe

José Manuel Barroso, European Commission president, yesterday laid out pro-business plans to revive Europe's economy but immediately signalled retreat on a flagship law to open up the EU's single market in services.

Mr Barroso was mocked by leftwing politicians after he set out a programme focused on growth and jobs and giving a lower priority to social and green goals.
