Airline investment fears as emissions deal agreed

Airlines warned yesterday that investment could be pruned back after European lawmakers gave the go-ahead to a deal forcing their industry to start paying for greenhouse gas emissions in four years' time.

The European parliament voted in favour - by 640 votes to 30 - of including aviation in the emissions trading scheme from 2012. All flights to, from and with-in the European Union will be affected, regardless of the airline's nationality.
