When fuel prices rose sharply a few years ago, it had an unexpected effect on car buyers’ behaviour in North America.

Higher running costs persuaded some owners of gas-guzzling 4x4s to trade in their vehicles for more economical and environmentally responsible models. This caused a glut of used SUVs on dealers’ lots, which drove down their price.
