Prodi's government collapses

Italy's centre-left government fell last night after narrowly losing a tumultuous vote of confidence in the -senate despite desperate attempts by Romano Prodi, the prime minister, to save his weakened coalition.

Mr Prodi intended to submit his resignation immediately to President Giorgio Napolitano, a spokesman for the prime minister said. The president may seek formation of a caretaker government or call early elections.
