Rosy future lies behind drip-feed of headlines

One of the signs of the maturity of the biotechnology industry and its inexorable move into the mainstream has been the frequency with which the sector now generates headlines in the mainstream press.

Patients in the UK have been demanding breakthrough treatments such as the Herceptin anti-cancer drug, while in the US scientists have successfully used tissue engineering to grown new bladders for children. Alongside these and other stories has been a more general increased focus on vaccines following the threat of bird flu. All these developments have catapulted biotechnology into the forefront of people’s minds.
