US junk bonds on course for record year

US junk bonds are heading for a record year, as investors chase high-yielding securities and foresee lower levels of corporate defaults.

The total return of the Merrill Lynch High Yield Master II Index to August 31 was 40.16 per cent, nearly a full percentage point above the all-time calendar-year record of 39.17 per cent in 1991.
