The landscape of British politics has changed. Middle England is no longer embarrassed about voting Conservative.
Two things stand out amid the avalanche of statistics from the local elections. The 250 or so seats gained by David Cameron’s party held up a mirror to the government’s losses; and the Tories’ 40 per cent share of the national vote is the highest it has recorded since 1992. We are back, it seems, to two-party politics.
