OFT chief warns on banks’ power

Rescue takeovers of troubled banks will further harm recession-hit customers if regulators fail to limit the threat of monopolistic behaviour, a top competition official will warn on Tuesday.

John Fingleton, chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading, says that antitrust watchdogs must prevent the emergence of a “two-tier system” in which financial behemoths squeeze out potential entrants to the market.
