Last year Beijing launched a “politeness” drive to improve public manners ahead of the 2008 Olympics. Now Shanghai is following suit. Over the past month, the city has conducted an all-out campaign against a new social evil – jaywalking.
Police, official media, companies and community groups have all been harnessed to force people to cross the road only when traffic lights permit. Around 35,000 pedestrians have so far been fined.
