Brussels to ease burden of asylum seekers

Asylum seekers attempting to gain access to the EU through popular “gateway” countries such as Malta and Greece may have their entry requests suspended for up to six months under rule changes announced by the EU executive on Wednesday.

The measures are part of a wider European Commission scheme to reduce pressure on states that become overloaded with asylum seekers who are on their way to more affluent countries such as the UK and Germany.
