Tax scheme escalates Argentine export row

In a move that appeared to have dramatically escalated a fight over export tariffs between the Argentine government and farmers, President Cristina Fernández has announced that revenue from the tax would be shared nationwide and spent on public works.

The mounting conflict in the world’s second-largest exporter of food commodities has fuelled fears in markets and among importers such as China of new strikes that could disrupt Argentina’s huge farm exports for the second year running.
