Thousands of workers exposed to asbestos due to their employers’ negligence on Wednesday lost the right to claim compensation if they subsequently developed pleural plaques – scars on the lungs.

The decision by the House of Lords ends a long legal battle that has been closely watched because of the large number of individuals affected and the financial ramifications for the insurance industry.
