What does a phase five pandemic alert mean?

Health experts distinguish between infection of close family members, carers, school-friends, which can happen even if the virus does not transmit very efficiently, and transmission affecting the wider community that takes on a life of its own, reports Frances Williams.

Phase five was declared when evidence from Mexico and the US suggested the start of "community-level outbreaks", as well as confirmation that swine flu had spread to Europe, the Middle East and Australasia.
