Rod Blagojevich, the governor of Illinois accused of trying to sell Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat, will not use his constitutional powers to appoint anyone to replace the president-elect, his lawyer said on Wednesday.
In the days since federal authorities made the allegations in a criminal complaint last week, Mr Blagojevich has become a political outcast, with a near-consensus among national and state politicians who have spoken out on the subject that he should resign his post and not make a Senate appointment.
