Bush mounts biting attack to thwart Kerry

President George W. Bush set out yesterday to check John Kerry's fresh political momentum, going negative on a Democratic challenger he portrayed with derision as a "tax and spend liberal" with a "record of weakness".

In a speech which was an exercise in belittling humour - rather than the substantive policy address promised by the White House - Mr Bush set out to remedy his shortcomings in last Thursday's presidential debate and raise new fears about a Kerry presidency.
